Pictures of India
So, was this a life-changing
experience?
My friend Kirill asked me this yesterday. I
don't know. Maaayyyybe. I do know
that it's hard to get back into a knit blog after this trip, mostly because I
keep thinking about how my view of things has changed, making resolutions for
how to change my life in Toronto, and thinking about the women I worked with in
Calcutta. So I think I will blog about this stuff more than the knitting. Is
that cool with everyone? Considering that I haven't finished a project in
months, my guess is that most of the people who actually read this blog are not
exactly knitting fanatics. So, I'ma
keep posting pictures* from India. Let's start with a knitterly
one.
It's a woman at the Tibetan Refugee
Self-help Center outside of Darjeeling, knitting one of fuzzy toques that
vacationing Indians throw on when the temp drops to a frosty 15 degrees on a
cold Darjeeling morning. The refugee
center is amazing -- a little self-sufficient commune hidden in the fog, and the
people there craft beautiful stuff all day long. They shear their own sheep,
spin and dye the wool, and then weave it into bags and clothes, and knit it into
sweaters and hats. This is their yarn
stock (unfortunately they don't sell the yarn), and the beautiful woman in
charge of hank-winding, with her kitten.
I know -- kitties and yarn!
Naturally, I was aaww-ing and cooing like an
idiot.*Lest you think that
I'm a really good photographer, let me say that each picture I post has usually
been enhanced and fancy-fied using software, and for every good picture, there
are, like, 10 crappy ones.
