the vampire with a soul

I'm addicted to a TV show. Get a life? never!

Last night I watched the last three episodes of Angel (downloaded to my computer courtesy of my pal Dave, tv-downloadin-maniac) and I cheered like a dork (a dork at a sci-fi con) at the incredible ass-kicking, and cried like a little girl (a little girl with a skinned knee) at the part where Wesley dies.

Now, I rarely watch TV, I mock people who care about characters on TV shows so much that they bring them up in conversations with friends as though the characters were actual people they know (like, "can you believe Theo tried to hide his test scores from Cliff again!".. you know who you are), and I pride myself in not getting emotionally invested in TV shows. But this summer at Nerd Camp I worked a lot of late hours, and Dave managed to convince me that there's no better way to chill at 3am, after a day of mathletics and loitering at the Food Buoy, than with mini-marathons of Angel.

And though it started off innocently as a good way to turn off my brain and get to some knitting, around season 3 the show got pretty good, and by the time I got to season 5, I found myself making connections to C.S. Lewis and Dostoevsky and (oh yes...i know this comment will come back to haunt me) the Bible while watching. Seriously, I think they must have some Christians on the writing staff, because, all the demons-n-prophecy malarky aside, I think they captured some of the basic principles of the Christian life in these episodes, even while leaving out the main one. No, seriously, I mean: a champion who must give up his own desires and self in order to serve the good, a man who over and over again repents and returns to his true calling, not to mention the uncanny ability of the demonic to sneak into our every day lives and tear appart the very strings of our affections? If you can think of a better pop culture illustration of the Christian life, I'd like to hear it. eh..hehe...don't answer that one.

Back to the knit. There are 4 projects, and many many gauge swatches, associated with my summer Angel marathon:

-- 3 squares for the Afghans_for_Us project, which i'm really only half-heartedly participating in, though it's a good way to use gauge swatches
-- the flame hat from the Stitch n Bitch Book, for the scrappy jew with the nice blue eyes
-- a red kitty hat forJosie, my summer roommate, who lives in Brazil and will likely never need a wool hat
-- prototypes of "bridesmaid bags" from the Hollywood Knits book, then abandoned when I realized they looked like crap, and when I decided not to go to the wedding (i later changed my mind out of sheer guilt, and spent a cool $500 or so, only to have my boobs fall out of my tacky red dress on the dance floor. yeah.)
-- the body, sleeves, and a whole lot of cabling for the viking sweater (still not finished)
