Wilderness Knitting
Here's what I did during my time in
woods.
I took the Nutella Sweater and my green sock with
me into the woods. This was the state of
the sweater when we started the car ride:
And here it is when I got home last
night:
The sucky thing is, I got that far on
the first night! But I retardedly left the pattern at home, so I couldn't go
any farther on the next two days.Which
means I got a lot done on the green sock:
... but I could have done a lot more
with a simpler pattern, i.e. one that you can do by candlelight, when a bottle
of Yukon Jack is making the rounds. The sock looks phat, but it takes long, and
I still have another one to do. I'm ....slow.
And now for some German craftiness,
here's a picture of Thomas the German post-doc constructing a Feuerzangenbowle
at the cottage.
Doesn't the look like a mountain man?
I am a fan of Thomas. I told him that he is exactly the type of dude my
grandmother wants me to bring home and marry, and he smiled sheepishly.
As German traditions go, this one
fills me with all kinds of national pride. Basically you construct a cone out
of sugar (in Germany you can buy your sugar in cone form, but here, you just
have to get a little crafty), then soak it in high-percentage rum, and light it
on fire over a pot full of spiced wine. As the rum burns off, the sugar
carmelizes and gloops into the wine. Tasty!
