You startin to look old
It's my birthday today.
Today I'm 26 and I'm making a concerted effort
not to be bummed out over getting older, which really shouldn't bum me out,
because so far it's been a pretty fun ride. I'll tellya though, I'm glad that
my grandmother refuses to call me when I'm in Canada (she thinks it will be
somehow different from and more complicated than calling the U.S., and that
she's too old to have to figure something like that out), because then I'd get
the old, "So you're twenty-****. Don't you think it's time you had a
boyfriend?" I'm not really the kind
of person to mope about my crappy dating life (no, seriously...I'm not, right?)
but it does kind of suck to have a birthday so close to the Hallmark holiday
where every time you step into a Shoppers Drug Mart you're assailed with signs
telling you that your life is sad and empty because you have nobody to buy cheap
plastic for (<--hm, you know, that is so the kind of clause I used to write
in angry high school essays, in my millitant-dork days). Add to that a German
Oma who is starting to wonder whether you're some sort of loveless freak, crappy
cold weather, and an army of angry undergrads who hate you for how you marked
their last problem set, and you've got yourself a depressing day.
When I was 21 I thought it would be
fun to pass my best friend off as a suitor, banking on the fact that my
grandmother has probably never met a homosexual in her life, but the old lady
wasn't fooled. But I digress, for today is my birthday, and in 3 months I'm
going to India, and i refuse to get bogged down in foolishness.
I also had a great weeked. On Friday,
I went to see a really good play at my friend Kate's theater
project . On Saturday, my friends Danielle and Vu tied the knot, and
it was possibly the best wedding I ever went to. Fun fun fun. Lovely ceremony,
awesome party. There was a live band , and people got their Lindy Hop on like
crazy. There was a great wedding jam where we took turns stealing the bride and
groom, and I got to dance with Vu twice during that, and I think I held my own,
despite all the wine in me and my slidey shoes.
And, in a great special crossover episode of
my two hobbies, I had a dance with the talented Miss
Bedora , who can knit and purl and follow and lead.
Bitchin'.And look, I'm knitting, too.
Last Wednesday I went to Lettuce to
replace some broken needles, but when they didn't have the ones I needed, I
glanced at the wall o' Lamb's Pride and spotted this green
goodness:
Yay for green! Green rocks. I don't
know what I will make out of this. Oh,and I also grabbed the new Interweave. I
think IK is the best knitting magazine out there. I've very excited to
make...something in it.Last
night I went to church , and church is for
socks:
Sermons at my church run anywhere from
20 to 40 minutes, but I still didn't get very far (they are cool with me
knitting while they preach, btw. My friend Allison brings her sketchbook.)
This pattern is going really slow, but I'm excited about it, plus at post-woship
chit chat the other girls are all :"oooh, let me see!" (Unfortunately the cute
boys are never that impressed by my
sock.)I also bought this on Sunday. Splurge splurge! Then I felt
really guilty. Then my mom called to tell me to watch my mailbox in the next
two days, which I think means that I am getting a birthday check. Now I will go
for a birthday run.
