I still knit sometimes

Right. This is a blog about knitting.

On Monday, I went to the yarn store here in Vienna. Since (my friends can attest to this) I really don't need any more yarn, I justified the trip with the fact that the only knitting I brought on this trip was (a) a set of armwarmers where I ran out of yarn, and (b) my 2nd green sock, where I left the pattern at home. Man, was I excited to get my hands on some European yarn brands in crazy exciting colors, hopefully at fractions of the price they are at Romni. Without a real plan (or pattern) in mind, I was determined to get something (a) colorful, and (b) worsted weight or thereabouts, and (c) European. Here is what I bought:

1. sock yarn.
2. sock needles.
3. Noro Silk Garden. For $10 Euro. In a beige colorway.

I don't know why, but I always emerge from yarn stores with something completely different from what I intended to get. What was I thinking? I don't know. Like I need to start another pair of socks. And what do you do with a single ball of silk garden?

Well, as for the sock yarn...
for lack of a pattern, I thought back to the socks I've made, decided to guess out the pattern, and cast on 60 stitches. That sounded so right in my mind. Unfortunately this gave me a huge-ass sock that fits around my calf:

Though it does stripe wickedly. Then I remembered where I got the 60 stitches... from the socks I made for my Dad for Christmas. D'oh.

So I ripped it out and, in the process, decided to consult an actual pattern, at which point I might as well leave plain old stockinette stitch behind. So now I'm doing these japanese feather socks, and I think that the lace + the stripes will look phat.

As for the Noro, ...I thought and thought, and started ...a scarf. Like I need another scarf. But oh well, I pulled a pattern out of last fall's Rebecca, which is for a totally different yarn and totally different needles than what I had, and just went for it. And here we are:

I know, right now it looks like burlap, but once the stripes start showing up, it's going to be great, and it will go wonderfully with my new purple blazer.

Speaking of which, i really wish my hair was still purple, but it has turned a decidedly mousy auburn. I hate it. Why the hell can't my hair hold a color?
