Low Resolution Infra-red Satellite
Images of the 1999 Cosmonaut Sea Polynya
NOAA 14 IR Image on July 10 1999
at 23:54 GMT
In this image, on can clearly
see the landfast sea ice along the coast. The pack ice farther
offshore is partially
obscured by low level clouds. Over the embayment, one can see
structure in the cloud field that is indicative of the intense air
sea interaction that was taking place at this time as the surface waters
exchange heat and moisture with the atmosphere.
Along the southern boundary
of the embayment, the absence of clouds
allows one to see the open
waters of the embayment.
NOAA 14 IR Image on July 14 1999
at 14:53 GMT
In this image, on can clearly
see the landfast sea ice along the coast as well as the pack ice
farther offshore. There are still areas of sea ice that are obscured
by cloud. Leads that separate ice floes are visible as dark regions.
Open water can be seen within the polynya.
