Low Resolution Infra-red Satellite Images of the 1999 Cosmonaut Sea Polynya

In this image, on can clearly see the landfast sea ice along the coast. The pack ice farther offshore is partially obscured by low level clouds. Over the embayment, one can see structure in the cloud field that is indicative of the intense air sea interaction that was taking place at this time as the surface waters exchange heat and moisture with the atmosphere. Along the southern boundary of the embayment, the absence of clouds allows one to see the open waters of the embayment.

In this image, on can clearly see the landfast sea ice along the coast as well as the pack ice farther offshore. There are still areas of sea ice that are obscured by cloud. Leads that separate ice floes are visible as dark regions. Open water can be seen within the polynya.
