  • General Information

Building academic capacity in the science and technology space sector is a priority of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), in particular through promoting the use of accessible and cost effective suborbital platforms and nanosatellites that can accommodate research and graduate student training. In this context, the CSA hosted a workshop on Suborbital Platforms and Nanosatellites on April 14, 15 and 16, 2010, at the John H. Chapman Space Centre in St-Hubert, Quebec (beginning at 13:00 on April 14 and ending at noon on April 16).

The major objectives of the workshop were:

  • To assess and document community usage (nature of science, likely payload requirements and frequency) of suborbital platforms (aircraft, balloons and sounding rockets) and nanosatellites as research and training tools over the next 5-10 years.
  • To assess the desirability of Canadian and/or international launch sites for each platform.
  • To consolidate the interest of, and initiate discussions with, potential leaders of a Canadian-based balloon launch facility.

  • Who Should Attend

  • Members, including students, of the Canadian space science communities from academia, industry and government were invited to participate in this workshop.
  • Participants interested in developing a proposal for a Canadian balloon launch facility were invited to participate.
  • Research managers and administrators from universities actively involved in space sciences were also invited to participate.

  • Workshop Program
