Research Interests

My research involves analysing observations of atmospheric trace gases made by the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE-FTS) instrument flown on board the Canadian research satellite SCISAT-1. The satellite's orbital geometry and solar occultation measurement technique allow for high resolution measurements of vertical profiles of many different gases in the atmosphere and is particularly well suited to monitoring stratospheric species in Polar Regions (approximately 10-50 km altitude). I am currently working with Prof. Kaley Walker on developing a climatology of gases related to ozone depletion in the stratospheric north pole (particularly: HNO3, ClONO2, H2O, O3, ClO, and HCl).

My PhD project involved ground-based remote sensing of the lower atmosphere with a Fourier Transform Spectrometer at the Toronto Atmospheric Observatory. This experimental technique allowed us to measure concentrations of different trace gases with varying vertical resolution in the stratosphere and the troposphere (approximately 0-10 km altitude). By using these observations we sought to better understand how these chemicals are related to urban pollution events, global warming, and stratospheric ozone depletion. The majority of my results were derived from implementing spectroscopic retrievals and error analysis algorithms for validating correlative satellite-based and ground-based measurements.

More information on the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment mission and SCISAT-1 can be found at the University of Waterloo and at the Canadian Space Agency. A more detailed description of the Toronto Atmospheric Observatory's science goals can be found at the University of Toronto.
