The ancient musical modal system of Iran, Khosravaani, was created by the Sassanid court musicians. The structure of present classical repertoire (Radif) dates back to the origins of Iranian nationalism (1785-1925).
The melodic hierarchy in Persian classical music
Radif, Tonality, Dastgaah (Avaaz), Maqaam, and Gousheh form the hierarchy in Persian classical music.
The Radif is divided into the five Tonalities: Maahur (close to Major), Homaayoun (close to minor), Shur, Segaah, Chaahaargaah.
The five Tonalities are more subdivided into 12 groups called Dastgaah. Sometimes five of Dastgaahs are sub-categorized as Avaaz. A dastgaah is further divided into Maqaams (modes).
The last division, Goushe, can be considered as the melodic pieces.
