Iran is home to one of the world's oldest continuous major civilizations, covers an area of 1,648,195 square kilometers in Central Eurasia and Western Asia. Its population has been 76,923,300 in 2010. Its capital is Tehran.

Where does the name "IRAN" come from?
Etymology of Iran is made up of "Ir" (i:r) + an (Aan). "Er" which later on became "Ir" is the root of the word arya and in old Persian 'ana' is a suffix of location and in modern Persian, it is 'an'. Therefore, Iran means "land of Aryans".


What is the national language in IRAN?
The national language is Persian (Farsi). It is the language of government and public instruction as well as the mother tongue of half of the population.







Which calendar is used in IRAN?
Iran is the only country in the Middle East that uses the solar calendar, which originated before the beginning of the Persian Empire (550 BC). Persian New Year's Day Norooz is on March 21, the vernal equinox.


What is the governing system in IRAN?
Iran was a constitutional monarchy, and turned to a republic due to an Islamic movement in 1979.
