Focus of Workshop: Aimed at graduate students as well as professionals who want to learn about atmospheric remote sensing. It is aimed at people with basic backgrounds in atmospheric physics and/or chemistry.
 

Format of workshop: The format of this workshop is intended to be both formal and informal. Formal lectures are scheduled, but with ample coffee and lunch breaks to allow informal discussion between participants.
 

Language: The language of the workshop will be English.
 
 
 

Canadian Participants:
 

• Jim Drummond: Prof. James R. Drummond, M.A., D.Phil.(Oxford, 1977), holder of the Professorial Chair in Atmospheric Remote Sounding from Space in Toronto. On the faculty of the Department of Physics, University of Toronto since 1979. Major research interests are the remote sounding of atmospheric composition using balloons, aircraft and satellites. Spectroscopy applied to atmospheric problems. Planetary atmospheres and their composition and radiative transfer. Major projects: Stratospheric balloon instrumentation projects 1973, TORBAR (1983), MANTRA (1998). Worked on satellites projects from NIMBUS series in the 1970's (SCR, PMR, SAMS) to the present. Currently Principal Investigator of the MOPITT satellite instrument to measure tropospheric composition from space. Co-Investigator on MAESTRO and FTS solar occultation satellite instruments for middle atmosphere composition. Principal Investigator on MARSBARS proposal for atmospheric sounding of Martian atmosphere. Co-Investigator on MANTRA-2002 balloon program. Awarded Patterson Medal for service to Meteorology in 1999.

 
• Vicky Hipkin: Dr. Vicky Hipkin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1995 with an MSc in Remote Sensing and Image Processing, and from the University of Leeds in 2000 with a PhD on Antarctic atmospheric boundary layer dynamics. Since then she has worked in New Zealand on atmospheric instrumentation before arriving at the University of Toronto in 2001 to work with Prof. Jim Drummond to define an atmospheric and geological mission to Mars. Vicky has been involved in two major ground-based atmospheric measurement campaigns: one in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, the other in the south Atlantic.

 
• Eamonn McKernan: Eamonn McKernan is finishing his PhD in Atmospheric Physics at the University of Toronto. His early physics research involved experimental nonlinear physics (pattern formation), and atmospheric numerical modelling (2-dimensional modelling of Chinooks). His PhD research has been on the MOPITT satellite instrument. A current member of the MOPITT science team, Eamonn carried out spectral response tests on MOPITT prior to instrument launch, and has been involved in subsequent instrument modelling efforts to better understand the data produced. Eamonn is also a member of the MOPITT validation team, and he wrote the control and data acquisition software for the grating spectrometer currently installed in Patagonia, and the retrieval software for analysing the measured spectra.

 
• Stella Melo: Dr. Stella Melo acquired her PhD in Space Science in 1994 at the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Since then, she has been working as Post-doctoral research at different locations and been involved in different projects. She was at INPE-Brasil, for two years, at York University, Toronto, Canada for 1 year, at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada for 3 years, and since November 2000 she has worked at University of Toronto, Canada. Her research involves use of both "in situ" and remote sounding techniques based on spectroscopy to measure atmospheric trace gases properties like concentration and temperature and their latitudinal/longitudinal and temporal variability. It also involves the use/development of models to interpret those measurements. She is currently involved in two projects: one focussing on the Arctic ozone layer and another one consisting of laboratory measurements of absorption cross-section of molecules of interest for atmospheric studies.

 
• Caroline Nowlan: Caroline Nowlan graduated from Mount Allison University with a BSc in physics in 1999, and from the University of Toronto with an M.Sc. in atmospheric physics in 2000. Her master's work included participation in the MANTRA (Middle Atmosphere Nitrogen TRend Assessment) balloon field campaign. She has worked as a research assistant in the National Research Council of Canada's molecular spectroscopy group with Fourier transform spectrometry. She am currently working towards a PhD on retrieving atmospheric temperature and pressure measurements from the MAESTRO (Measurement of Aerosol Extinction in the Stratosphere and Troposphere Retrieved by Occultation) satellite instrument under the supervision of Prof. Jim Drummond.

 
• Ben Quine: Ben Quine is a research associate in the Department of Physics, University of Toronto. He received a BSc in Physics from the University of Bristol in 1993 and a D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 1997. He is primarily involved in the development and data analysis of space and balloon-based instrumentation. His first space instrument, an autonomous navigation camera, was launched on the ESA PROBA spacecraft this October and is currently undergoing on-orbit trials. His continuing research interest is the physics of planetary atmospheres.

 
• Boyd Tolton: Prof. Boyd Tolton is an Assistant Professor of physics at the University of Toronto. Boyd received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1996. He has been involved in a number of atmospheric remote sounding project including MOPITT. Currently, he has been working on validation of MOPITT satellite measurements. Principle investigator for CO₂ satellite remote sensing concept study. Also involved in concept study leak detection from natural gas pipelines.

 
• Dmitri Yashcov: Dr. Dmitry Yashcov graduated from the State Optics Institute of St. Petersburg State University 1998 with a PhD in Optics and Spectroscopy. His PhD research was on the retrieval software and ground-based testing of the Satellite Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectrometer DOPI. Since then he was a research scientist for the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Changes (NDSC) FTIR site Kiruna Sweden. Recently, Dmitri has going the Atmospheric physics group at the University of Toronto
