Conclusions

The model calculations of Pitari and Vizi (1993) and Rosenfield et al. (1997) were compared with the ANN-TOMS derived ozone variation. They give essentially the same depletion amplitude, the first ones at the end of 1991 and the second one at the end of 1992, at the late Antarctic ozone hole period.

The present results show that the ANN non linear technique can be a powerful tool for analyzing ozone time series perturbations, like the strong Pinatubo volcanic eruption on June 1991. It can also be employed for time series validation and for filling up gaps in data sets, produced by temporary interruptions due to instrument calibrations, changes in satellite orbit, etc.
